Cyprus, and specifically the
K1 Triathlon Club, is a great place for winter training and
both
Triathlon
and
Duathlon
events.
The Club is situated at Royal Air Force Base
AKROTIRI but has members from all over the island.
These include Military Personnel, UKBC’s, Dependants
and Civilians. A full calendar of events runs from
January through to April with the
Duathlon series (run,
bike, run) followed in May through to October with a
series of
Triathlon events
(swim, bike, run).
Highlights of the calendar are the
Tri-Star's Children's Triathlon,
an event exclusively for children aged 8 to 18 on a
traffic-free course, the
Inter Services Competition
in late September which is held over the Olympic
Triathlon distance (1500/40/10). Finally, in
October we host the
Charity Fun Triathlon
event, which combines fund raising with the chance
for complete novices
to
“Try a Tri”
and the end-of-season
Prize Giving for
League Winners.
The
K1 Triathlon Club
events,
with the exception of May when we hold two events,
are all held on the last Sunday morning of the
month. All events generally offer two distances –
Super Sprint distance of 300/15/3 and the Sprint
distance of 750/20/5. Full details are available
in the "EVENTS" Link at the top of the page, or in the
Cyprus Lion newspaper.
All
events are held within the confines of RAF Akrotiri
on safe and virtually traffic-free roads. The Club
boasts a sea-front location, next to JJ’s Beach
Club, a purpose-built transition area and Club
Equipment which can be hired for a small fee. Our
most utilised assets are the racing bikes which have
been bought initially from a Nuffield Trust grant
and lately through Club funds. The small hire fee
helps the
K1 Triathlon Club
to
keep the bikes maintained and roadworthy.
Both the
RAF and Army Triathlon Associations have made use of
our facilities during the last few years and are
equally keen to continue to run their warm weather
training camps from the
K1 Triathlon Club.
Who can blame them for wanting to swim in the clear
warm waters of the Med and cycle around Akrotiri
with stunning views of the Troodos Mountains in the
background? Their time on the Island pays dividends
to the Club Members as they also hold training
seminars.
The
K1 Triathlon Club
is
always on the lookout for new members, many of whom
are recruited at the “try-a-tri” event. It is a
friendly Club and no matter what your standard is,
what your level of fitness is or what equipment you
use, you will always be made welcome and given
advice to get you through your first event. Equally
welcome are families and friends who are visiting
relatives in Cyprus and those who are in Cyprus for
short detached periods.
We
work closely with the Cyprus Triathlon Federation,
and most of our members also participate in the
CYTRIFED races. Details of the CYTRIFED races,
venues and results are updated on our website. |
